Self Portrait Project

Our self-portrait project is both a challenging and inspiring form of self-expression. Regardless of grade level or skill set, our students starting in kindergarten find different points of entry with this ongoing fall project. The objective is to encourage their patience and careful observation using drawing and painting. Drawing oneself from a mirror requires great focus and attention to detail. Students gain a better understanding of symmetry and proportion, while developing eye-hand coordination. Over the course of several weeks, they are asked to create multiple drafts and then select one drawing to develop further. This review process allows the students to discover their drawing technique, but also helps them understand the process of refining a singular idea.

This annual project provides an exploration of personal emotion and self-identity for our students. By working over several weeks towards a larger goal, Ms. Maloney observes students more and more invested in the process and developing a deeper connection to his/her work.
