English Language Arts – Writer’s Workshop
With our small class sizes and focus on individualized attention, writing is an area HWIS students have ample opportunity to develop. In this “Small Moments” exercise, our elementary students were provided a lesson in how to expand a small moment into a personal narrative.
After brainstorming and beginning a draft, Ms. Cavanaugh provides feedback and suggestions at which point our students edit and refine their work culminating in “publication” which can mean presenting the finished work to parents or classmates.
Units such as this instill a sense of ownership of work, as well as confidence and the idea that “This is your project, and it’s up to you to develop it to the point at which you’re happy with it.”
