Here's an overview of the programs being offered to HWIS students in the spring of 2020
In the China Experience we will visit 3 cities, Beijing, Chengdu, and Zunyi. Students will be immersed in China’s history and rich cultural diversity as we travel through Western China. Although we’ll be visiting some of the major sites such as the Great Wall, and the Leshan Buddha, the focus of this program will be to help students to create a lasting connection with the people, and the communities with whom we engage. The experiences planned, from tea picking in the “sea of tea,” to dining with monks a top the holy “ Ding ” will help to guide students in their daily language and cultural competence objectives. The culminating experience will be a homestay with a Chinese family from our partner school. During which students will be paired with a host sibling the same age and gender as themselves.
In the Panama Experience, we will visit urban and rural communities, historic sites, cultural centers, and natural reserves that showcase the biodiversity and wonder of this amazing country. While we will visit some of Panama’s most well-known sites such as the Panama Canal, and Casco Viejo, the focus of this program will be interacting with our partner communities and using language in unfamiliar ways. We will also make sure to let those more adventurous students stretch their legs by taking in the natural beauty of Panama and engaging with the country through hikes, surfing, and more. The culminating experience will be a 5-day homestay with a Panamanian family from our partner school. During which students will be paired with a host sibling the same age and gender as themselves.
